Dell makes page on what’s great about Linux/Ubuntu

I randomly came across this page today.

Ubuntu Keeps getting better.

It looks like Dell is doing more to support the sale of it’s Linux pre-installed computers.  It’s got a nice comparison of windows vs Ubuntu Linux.

I already use Ubuntu full time on my laptop and I also use it on my server.  Both are working great with no hic-ups.  Nice to see linux moving up.

No 64-bit Adobe Flash for Linux! Why! Why!

I can’t stand having to need hacks in Linux to get flash working. I don’t really care about the FLASH VS HTML5 fight going on, but if Adobe keeps this type of crap up, I hope HTML5 will win. Then I only have to care about a browser and no more stinking plugins that continually crash my browser. And that is on Windows or Linux.

Oh, there is my rant for the day. Thanks for listening.

Firefox Losing Foothold on Linux Distros?

Firefox is one of my favorite browsers, but I hate to say it is starting to lag behind.  The above title is an article written by Joe Brockmeier from Linux Magazine (Link to original article).

It talks about how Google Chrome, and Safari are probably taking it’s place.  I hate to say it, but I do like Google Chrome, and in fact it is my default web browser on all my Windows machines.  Though Firefox is still the best browser on Linux for me.

To help bluster my browser, I wanted to point out the changes that are coming.  Sort of a Mozilla Firefox 4.0 look and compare to current Chrome.

Extension

The one thing I love about Chrome is the way it does extensions.  I don’t necessarily love the extensions that Chrome currently has.  They have a long way to go before they have Firefoxs library.  But it’s simplisted is wonderful how they install and work.  Simple, clean, and interactive.

So what about Firefox.  Well they are going to solve that through an update call Jetpack.  Jetpack extensions work just like Chrome extensions.  In fact I don’t think it would be that hard to port a Chrome extension to Firefox Jetpack or vs versa.

Check out Jetpack here.

SCREEN SIZEMozilla Firefox 4.0 Mockup

While I do like how the extensions work in chrome, chromes greatest feature, is browsing screen realistate.  It does a a great job of showing more of the webpage and less of the browser.  Again though Firefox is working on that two.   Check out this picture though to see Firefox 4.0 mockups.

As you can see Firefox has great potential.

STABILITY

The last thing that is great about Chrome, is it’s stability.  If my flash crashes it only takes down that one tab.  Not the whole browser.  But again, this feature is going to also be built into Mozilla Firefox 4.0.

CONCLUSION

While Firefox my be behind, it is close to playing catchup, and I think I will be able to switch back to my browser baby as my full time browser on all OS soon.

Free Wi-Fi from your neighbor! Well, if you live in Finland anyway.

PC World has an article on there website about how un-portected wi-fi access points might become legal to use in Finland. (Link to Article)

I just wanted to point this article out because of how important it is to secure your personal wi-fi.  You never know who is using your internet and what for.  Plus don’t use your neighbors wi-fi, it is still illegal in the States.
